Dr Stavros Taraviras
Stavros Taraviras is a Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology at the Medical School, University of Patras, Greece. He holds a Ph.D from the University of Heidelberg, Germany and postdoctoral research appointments at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and the MRC/National Institute for Medical Research in London, UK.
Upon his return to Greece in 2001, as a Faculty member at the Medical School, University of Patras, he established an independent research group focusing on how extrinsic and intracellular signalling cues regulate stem and progenitor cell proliferation, differentiation decisions and organogenesis and how these mechanisms participate in the pathogenetic mechanisms of human disease.
His results have been published in more than 87 articles (in Pubmed) in high profile journal (eg Development, Glia, PNAS, EMBOJ, EMBO Reports, Neuron, Science, Stem Cells Reports).
His research work has been funded by over 12 national and international competitive research grants as a coordinator or PI, while he has participated in more than 10 national and international grants as a collaborating researcher. National and International Funding agencies have supported his research including Association for International Cancer Research, Leukaemia Research Foundation, EU NEST-STREP, EU REGPOT, Foundation Santé, Hydrocephalus USA etc.
Dr. Stavros Taraviras is a member of the Editorial Board of the: European Journal of Molecular Biology, Frontiers in Biosciences, International Journal of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and Stem Cell Discovery.
- He has been the supervisor of 12 PhD students, 37 Master students and 14 postdoctoral fellows. Past lab members have progressed successfully to the next step in their career (eg faculty members, consultants in Biotech, Pharmaceutical companies, Specialised Clinicians etc). Member in over 19 PhD Examination Committees and over 19 MSc Examination Committees in Greece and abroad.
- Postgraduate teaching: First and Second year teaching in 3 Postgraduate Programs organized by the Medical School, University of Patras: “Applications of Basic Medical Sciences”, “Clinical Specializations” and “Life Sciences Informatics”.”
- Pregraduate teaching: Second and third year of Medical School students: subject “Pharmacology”, “Physiology”, “Neuroscience”, “Physiology and Biology of stem cells-applications in Regenerative Medicine”.
- He has served as reviewer of research grants for Greek National Funding agencies and international funding agencies from USA, UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Israel, Cyprus, Czech Republic.
- He is currently a member of the Editorial Board in 5 journals and reviewer for several international journals.
- He has been a main organiser or co-organiser in more than 13 international and national symposia and practical courses, four of which were sponsored by EMBO.
- He has been invited to present the research of his group in more than 80 Universities, Research Institutions and meetings in Greece and abroad (USA, Germany, France, Cyprus, Netherlands).
